  5. New Accommodation Project

Consulting different experts (two from Germany and two from India) we learned that one of our housing units threatens to collapse. The life expectancy of the building are assumed 5 to 10 years if there won’t be any vibrations of any kind. The reason is a foundation which has always been too weak to support the building. The nuns’ rooms will be used by students as well as teachers as their studying and working rooms to prepare lessons.

The new administrators found two experienced monk from Drepung Gomang and they accepted to help looking after the labor work. They came to the nunnery to look after the places and told us that by destroying the old building is not the best option as its foundation is not good enough to build a new one by any means with the fact that the old house is situated near to the channel. The channel makes the ground weak. They said they couldn’t take responsibility if we carried out the old plan as they don’t grantee a good foundation. They suggest us that it’s best to start the hostel construction on the new land we have rather than remodeling the old one so that we also won’t face the accommodation problem for a while.

Since every year about 15 nuns are admitting in our nunnery brings us to the state of housing shortage. Many new nuns with an aspiration to learn Buddhist philosophy had to rent house outside the nunnery to continue their education. Our new administrative nuns took the challenge to start the accommodation construction to admit more number of aspiring nuns across the world.

An elected administration independently organizes the monastery with its manifold tasks such as accommodation and food for the nuns. Studying Buddhist philosophy takes at least 17 years and can meanwhile lead to the final exam as a Geshema corresponding a PhD. So far 15 Geshemas have successfully completed their studies. Another two nuns are currently preparing for their important exams which will come up next autumn.

At present live 275 nuns in our monastery. We like to mention that we also have students from abroad for example five nuns from Taiwan, three nuns from Korea, three nuns from China and two nuns from America.

The monastery already started a campaign to advertise the building project to all possible outreach. Any amount of donations will be highly appreciated. All nuns of Jangchub Choeling nunnery will keep you all in our prayers.

We assure you that the fund received shall be utilized only for the intended purpose. May you earn huge merits from your generous donation towards this project. Thank you!
